This program does not require any fees for useage. If you really like my
program, I won't turn down a donation. Actually, any feedback received
would be nice enough. Most of todays software can run in the current
screen mode. So V is handy to change it quickly, it is MUCH more flexible
than going into a programs configuration to change it! Enjoy my utility.
overview and features:
──────────────────────
Video 1.0 is a screen display utility for EGA/VGA display adapters.
It's main purpose is to change a normal 25-line display to 43-lines for EGA
and 50-lines for VGA (and back again when needed). It also has other
features as well. It will detect and display the type of video display
adapter that is installed on your system. And, it will clear a screen
completely in any color video mode. If you have an enhanced ANSI driver
loaded, such as David Nugent's DNANSI, this driver enables all 43 or 50
lines at the DOS prompt. In this case, a DOS CLS command will only clear
off the top 25 lines of the screen in some instances. Video 1.0 will clear
ALL the screen, except if in 43/50-line black & white mode in some instances.
'In some instances'- meaning I have noticed varying behavior with CLS using
different video graphics boards. The EGA card I use needs a V /C clearscreen,
while some VGA Systems I use the DOS CLS command will clear the screen in
50-line mode. It will depend on your particular system whether V /C is
needed or not.
Note: Some program configurations will FORCE the current video mode. For
example, my Turbo C++ compiler will run in what is setup in the
TC configuration. So, if I have 25-line mode setup in TC, this
mode will always be displayed, even if I am in 43/50-line mode at
the DOS prompt. What I consider 'smarter' software, is software
that will display automatically in whatever mode the current display
lines are. Example, my text editor will run in whichever mode I set
with V commands, either 25 or 43/50-line modes. This is where the
benefit in the V utility shines.
setting up Video 1.0:
─────────────────────
Put V.Exe anywhere in your PATH, along with any of your other PC utilities.
See your DOS manual about the PATH Statement if needed. That's all there
is to installation. If you have a program or batch file called V.Com or
V.Bat, you may wish to rename V.Exe to some filename more suitable.
The original name of this program started out as Video.Exe, but I found out
that V.Exe was easier and more suitable. :-)
Video Command line parameters: (case insensitive)
V /? or /H Display command line options
V /B - change screen to Black & White 80 x 25
V /C - clear the screen, any color mode - DOS CLS replacement
V /D - display video adapter hardware type
V /25 - change screen to 80 x 25 color mode
V /43 - change screen to EGA 80 x 43 mode
V /50 - change screen to VGA 80 x 50 mode
Video 1.0 technical info:
─────────────────────────
V.Exe was compiled with Borland International's Turbo(C++) 1.00
using the Small Memory Module ( < 64kb ).
Video 1.0 exits with the following errorlevels for trapping in a *.Bat
file. Although not really needed, they are there for a batchfile guru.
<grin>
errorlevel 4 - /H help parameter used
errorlevel 3 - invalid command line parameter entered or missing '/'
errorlevel 2 - invalid command chosen (i.e: V /43 on a CGA or VGA)
errorlevel 1 - no graphics display adapter present
errorlevel 0 - successful completion
Video 1.0 was tested on a PC/AT 80286/12MHz EGA system under DOS 4.01.
It should work with DOS 2.0 or above.
Video 1.0 will correctly detect the following video diplay adapters;
V /D will detect any of the below graphics hardware if present;
V /C will clear the screen of any of the below graphics hardware;
If no graphics adapter is present, it will notify you with an error.
Type: Valid Commands:
IBM 3270 PC V /B V /25
AT&T 6300 V /B V /25
Hercules Monochrome V /B
CGA V /B V /25
MCGA V /B V /25
EGA Monochrome V /B V /43
EGA 64k V /B V /25 V /43
EGA 256k V /B V /25 V /43
VGA V /B V /25 V /50
IBM 8514 VGA V /B V /25 V /50
Note: After a V /B, a V /25 is required to restore color mode.
Video /43 or Video /50 after Video /B is still black and white mode,
and this causes the V /C command to exhibit different results using
certain video cards.
